Urgent Moroccan journalist arrested
We have received urgent news of the arrest of a Moroccan journalist, Mustapha El-Hasnaoui, after he was summoned for questioning in “La Brigade Nationale de la Police Judiciare” in Casablanca also known as (Al-Ma’rif) . The questioning was due to begin at 9:30am on Thursday 16/05/2013, it was then postponed to 1pm, however until now there is no news of him.
His wife and mother in law attempted to see him, travelling from Kenitra to Casablanca only to be turned away by the authorities while promising them they will hand some clothing and food that was brought by them to Mustapha. They declined to give any reasons for the arrest and have not allowed him to make any contact to his family.
Mustapha was a highly regarded journalist with his articles printed on national papers such as Almassae and Alsabeel and other well known online news sites such as Hespress, lakome, andaluspress and others. He was critical of the government and broke a number of stories that generated great national attention. His arrest has kick started a viral online campaign on social networking sites.
